€15,500 Settlement After Hot Coffee Spill on Ryanair Flight

A civil case arising from a hot beverage spill during a Ryanair flight from Reus Airport in Spain to Dublin has concluded with a court-approved settlement of €15,500. The compensation relates to injuries sustained by an 18-month-old child at the time of the incident.

According to court records in Ireland, the incident occurred within the first 30 minutes of the approximately two-hour flight. While the child was asleep on their mother’s lap, a cup of hot coffee placed on a tray table attached to an unoccupied seat reportedly tipped over, spilling onto the child’s arm, torso, and legs. The spill allegedly caused burns and blistering.

Court submissions claimed that the beverage was excessively hot and served in a container lacking a secure lid system. It was further alleged that access to appropriate first aid equipment on board was insufficient, forcing the parents to apply temporary measures until landing. Upon arrival in Dublin, the child received initial medical attention on the apron before being transferred to a pediatric hospital.

Ryanair did not admit liability as part of the settlement. The court deemed the agreed amount appropriate and formally approved the resolution. The child, who was 18 months old at the time of the incident, is now five years old.
